I am working with a grey colour palette for two jobs at the moment, both with beautiful timber floors. I love the way the warmth of the wood balances the cool tones of the grey. Such a sophisticated, yet relaxed scheme to work with. These images provided great inspiration.

A little bit of girly glamour for a Monday morning... I'm willing to make a bet that the owner of this bathroom has explicitly banned any male from stepping foot over the threshold of this impeccable bathing wonderland. Can you imagine some great brute of a man standing unsupervised in that gorgeous room, scattering nasal hair all over the place and wiping his hands on the embroidered towel that everyone knows is NOT to be used?

Personally, I'm most smitten with the spectacular light fittings that glow like regal sea creatures, although the fret work on the door is running a close second.

I love this room... the combination of the white wicker beds with the gold leaf mirror and coral detailed bedlinen seems vaguely Caribbean to me. It looks like a room that would belong in one of those beautiful old, white-washed plantation style homes with hurricane shutters adorning the exterior like eyelashes. I can imagine lying on one of those plump beds, listening to waves crash on a nearby beach, while pretty linen curtains suck and billow in the sea breeze. Pass me my espadrilles will you, I think I fancy a swim!

If you were an interior space, what would you be? A glamorous teal and silver living room like my friend Jules? A pink whimsical bedroom like my friend Emma, complete with beautiful linen and butterfly wallpaper? I just came across the above image and was struck by how it totally captures my design alter-ego. The soft palette, the mismatched furniture, the wicker, the oak, the patterned cushion, the window seat, the white walls, the detailing. I love that the arrangement is a little imperfect, a little quirky and a little lived-in... just like me!

This is one of my favourite colour combinations used in such a beautiful way in this image. It's a great example of a successful marriage between traditional and contemporary looks... the designer has taken a classic window seat and added a modern table in a contrasting colour and two Bertoia chairs - genius! I love all the different fabrics used for the cushions, the metallic sheen of the pendant light and the black and white accessories used on the shelves. Stunning!

Halloween Bug

I've never been a big Halloween fan, always chalking it up to consumerism gone mad. But this year, as I roamed the brightly decorated streets of our neighbourhood with my little boy all dressed up, listening to the shouts and cries of excited children all around me proudly showing off their painstakingly crafted costumes, I could literally feel my soul being touched by something quite profound. I can only assume that it was community spirit - these days, it can be a very hard thing to find, let alone recognise! Is it such a bad thing I wonder, to bribe little children with sweets to talk to their neighbours?

And look... it's not everyday you get to see two giant rabbits holding hands in your street!

Have I mentioned lately how crazy our lives have become now that both my husband and I work from home with a very vocal toddler beneath our feet? Yes, you're right... I have... repeatedly! Sorry. Some days I feel like my brain might actually burn out, that it will start billowing smoke and simply shut down. I'm developing a Jeckyl & Hyde personality disorder - Mama for two minutes, Designer for one. But every day I discover new things about myself... like I can simultaneously blog and mash banana, all while playing peek-a-boo with a stuffed rhino! It is a crazy, chaotic and wonderful life filled with precious moments tucked into the folds of the mayhem. I am so blessed to spend my days sitting across the studio from the man I love with our beautiful boy quietly chewing carpet samples in the corner. Life doesn't get much better than this... except maybe when my boys bring me flowers!

Vintage Hunter: Comic Books

While ambling through Vinnies the other day, searching for a 'new' desk for my husband ("must be old, must not be a desk, must be oak, must be an orphan, must be precisely 1500x750mm, must have character"... I could go on with his list of criteria...) I came across a pile of old comic books lurking in the shadows. Hiding in there was this 1968 Superman Annual for $1! I couldn't resist it... literally... I walked away but then went running back like a filthy addict. My poor little boy is in danger of growing up thinking his bedroom is a portal to 1971!

Pretty cool though, don't you think? I love the colours, the smell of the pages, the use of fonts, the brilliance of comic strip formation. Maybe all the vintage paraphernalia that crowds Leo every night as he goes to sleep, will be an antidote to the hideous techno-worship I'm terrified he'll contract upon his 3rd birthday? Fingers crossed!

Quirky Decorating: Little Girls Bedroom

I've been really intrigued lately with the idea of creating interiors that ooze individuality and authenticity, that break the rules a little and spark imagination. There are so many elements of this crazy circus bedroom that I adore - the mismatched rugs, the fancy sun umbrella, the child-height blackboard, the flapping bunting (I particularly love that it's not hung against the wall, but has been left to float and flap in the room like proper little flags), the wildly patterned bedlinen. It looks like a haven of fun for a tiny tot, where fairies and sprites might just pop out of the cracks!

Lament of the Neglectful

Neglect is a terrible, terrible thing and neglect is exactly what my poor blog is suffering from these days. It's like a beautiful old cabinet that's been left to gather dust in a forgotten room of a deserted house. I pine for the time when I could sit and pour over images of homes and feel my heart fill up to the brim. Soon, very soon, I will be back with a bit of lick and polish and a story or two about the cutest kitchen reno imaginable... all done on a shoestring and a prayer. Until then, I shall look lovingly at this old beauty and dream of a studio big enough to fit it!

Vintage Suitcase Metamorphosis

Being the vintage suitcase addict that I am, I thought this idea was brilliant! To me, this chest of drawers is the perfect example of up-cycling done right - taking old items and breathing new life into them in a way that suits their original form. My husband would argue that it's sacrilege to destroy the authenticity of anything so beautiful, no matter how clever the innovation... he hates "messing with imperfection", preferring the honesty of purity. What do you think? Do we risk the annihilation of time-worn character when we seek to improve on the old?

Humble Touch

We really don't need much in this life... a roof over our heads, food on the table and people to love. Lately, I've been really taken with the idea of the 'humble home'. The economic doom of recent times has arrived on our doorstep carrying an unexpected gift... the realisation that a beautiful environment has everything to do with surrounding ourselves with things we find unique and special - our family and friends included - and nothing to do with expensive trappings.

I love the interior above - it might be simple, practical and humble, but these things render it quite beautiful in its own right. It is an interior that is totally comfortable in its own skin - it doesn't pretend to be anything other than what it is. I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere x

I'm seeing a client next week who has described her aesthetic as 'Kelly Hoppen warmed up'. It got me thinking about the elements that make Kelly Hoppen's signature style so striking. I've decided it's the monochromatic colour schemes, the symmetry of compositions, the avid use of tactile materials and the pared back elegance that is not the least bit understated. Kelly's use of proportion and space is spot on. I can't wait to infuse a bit of Ms Hoppen's grand glamour into my client's home.

I feel like I've been having an affair... obsessing over a new love... sneaking behind your backs! Actually, I've just been busy creating a new online portfolio for my interior design business, but it's taken so much thought, time and energy that I have neglected you all this week, for which I am very, very sorry.

BUT the exciting thing about this new development is that I finally get to compartmentalise my life a little. I have always struggled with the idea of Wicker & Stitch being a platform for my professional self... I love that it is personal and quirky and totally focused on gathering joy and whimsy. It is a place to soothe my soul where I can dream and write poetry and share the everyday goings-on of a creative little family. So this morning, as I sit here in my PJ's with the Monkey chewing a power cord at my feet and a dramatic stormy sky filling up the windows, I am happy... and that is a thing to be treasured x

My hair is behaving. Andre is cooking a roast for lunch. The Monkey gave me kisses and cuddles. The weather is amazing. It's clean sheet Sunday. We just mopped the floor... no more sticky feet. The Magnolias are out in bloom. I meditated and felt my soul fill with sun. It's Master Chef Grand Final tonight. I'm drinking my third cup of tea for the day... in my pink and white stripe cup (I'll skip to the end, shall I?). I HAVE 200 FOLLOWERS!!!!!!!!

I only discovered childrens brand, Ruby & Belle a few weeks ago while meandering my way around the internet (...wasting hour after hour, looking at insanely beautiful things!). I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous offerings of designer and owner, Mekaela Ferrero - her mix of bright colours, whimsical prints and sweet designs are totally captivating. With a background in boutique bridal and fashion design, its little wonder that her blog and online shop are such a bounty of creative magic... find out what makes this crafty Mum tick.

WHEN YOU WERE A KID, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP?

I wanted to be a fashion designer. I've been obsessed with sewing since I could hold a needle and always had some crafty project on the go.

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN BACKGROUND?

I completed a Fashion Technology course at Tafe straight after school and after a couple of years traveling overseas I returned to Sydney where I studied a Bachelor of Design, Fashion and Textile at UTS. Following that, I had my own bridal boutique in Newport on Sydney's Norther Beaches. I moved the business to home when I had my children and continued making dresses until my second child was born.

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING RUBY & BELLE?

I have been doing markets on and off for about 10 years and started my first label, Ruby Rosebud Designs prior to moving to Brisbane in 2009. I gave the business a make-over when it progressed from a hobby to a busy home based job. I have always loved the crafty side of sewing and this was a perfect way for me to be able to stay home and be a Mum as well.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION WHEN DREAMING UP A NEW PRODUCT OR COLLECTION?

I have a magazine addiction and will often take inspiration from there - I like to try and recreate things in my own vision. Some things just evolve... my handmade birdcages came from my business logo that my graphic artist and I came up with. Originally I made two just to hang in my market stall as decoration and ended up selling them both on the first day!

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF HAVING A DESIGN BUSINESS?

Balancing work and family time is the biggest challenge. Also, the market and handmade industry has taken off in a big way over the past couple of years, so there is a lot of competition now. It can be difficult to maintain original products so trying to introduce new ideas and knowing when to let old ones go can be tricky.

WHERE CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR PRODUCTS?

Ruby & Belle online - the website will be getting progressively updated over the next couple of months. I'm a stall holder at the Boutique Markets in Hamilton Wharf, Mathilda's Markets in Ascot (next market: Sat 6th August - look for me in the white marquee outside) and The Butterfly Tree baby and kids market, on the Gold Coast.

It's Chic To Be Shabby

A friend of mine is doing a mini makeover of her apartment... out with the old, dark wood furniture belonging to her husband (what is it with men and heavy bench seat dining tables I ask you?) and in with a whole collection of bits and pieces she has sourced from all over the internet at bargain basement prices. The plan is to paint everything in various neutral shades and then give them a loving scrub down with sandpaper. Before you know it, she will have a brand new interior scheme using affordable furniture that is dripping with character (and sweat!).

In this era of tightening budgets and economic meltdowns, is it little wonder that Shabby Chic has continued to win over our hearts? Not only is second-hand furniture cheap, but the subsequent hours of tedious, back-breaking labour required to transform an ugly duckling into a swan, provide a mood-altering high so powerful it can blind us from the fear of interest rate rises for at least a week!

Boiserie Panelling

Exposed Beams

My husband and I don't always see eye to eye on architectural detailing... he often loves super 'architecty' things that make me turn up my little nose! BUT we do share a love of exposed beams and rustic interior spaces. If we ever build a house (an event more unlikely than I can tell you) then we would have a kitchen just like this one.

You know me, I'd be sorely tempted to paint that ceiling totally white but then you wouldn't see the beautiful contrast of the beams... the lime-washed finish combined with the skylight is a beautiful touch.

Bedroom Scheme: Mauve & Ice Blue

Ever since I was tiny I've been in love with mauve... I blame it on my grandmother Marnie (it's such a granny word after all) who used to wear mauve cardigans, grow almost exclusively mauve coloured flowers and decorate her house with mauve cushions (a little O.T.T I'll grant you, but I grew up in a house where the predominant colour combination was brown on brown so you'll forgive my adoration!).

To this day, one of my favourite bedroom schemes is mauve and ice blue. I find it so soothing, so pretty, so peaceful... so undeniably girly! Often, just a touch of pinky purple is quite enough x

Timber Framed Patterned Headboard

I love this idea... if you have a delicious handyman floating about your home like I do, then whipping up this headboard should be a cinch! The construction of the frame is apparently quite simple (I'll take my husband's word for it!) and you can either use fabric or wallpaper to create a stunning framed headboard.

You can adjust the proportions to suit the ceiling height - I love that the above headboard is really tall, but you could only get away with it in a room with high ceilings. A squat heaboard would also look great using this application.

Just out of interest, do you say 'Bedhead' or 'Headboard'?

My Love Affair with Africa

I'm back... from a land so beautiful it almost defies description. My journey through South Africa was filled with so much wonder and colour it will remain etched in my memory as a place where the heartbeat of the country is audible in the sky and the landscape and the vast razor-wire jungle of Johannesburg. It is a place of contradictions, where fear sits comfortably with pride, where anxiety is soothed by smiles so blinding you remain desolate in their wake.

I loved it. From the radiant light of the Waterberg, to the crude, yet stunningly beautiful architecture that is so raw and authentic. I adored the people and the way they turn every child into royalty. The harsh, imposing landscape of the Cape made me feel insignificant and powerful all at once. The animals... my God, the animals! To see an elephant flap his ears and mock charge at twenty paces is a chilling thrill everyone should experience at least once.

Here are just a few photos... a little teaser of things to come. I was so inspired by the architecture (particularly my husband's!) that I'll post in more detail as soon as I get organised. I'm warning you that I'm now obsessed with stone... their use of natural materials is so superior to anything I've seen here in Australia it definitely warrants further exploration!

My African Love

When I first met my husband, he was living in South Africa and I was here in Sydney. Our romance quickly escalated into a full-blown 18th Century style, cross-continental love affair, complete with treasured letters and swooning hearts. To be together meant taking a leap of faith... but our love proved far bigger than the ocean that divided us.

Tomorrow, we are taking our 9 month old baby boy back to visit the country of his ancestors. We leave for South Africa in the morning... I'm so excited (and busy) I can barely think straight! I thought I would share with you two photos I sent Andre in the early days of our romance....

Such a simple approach to decorating a stairwell, but I love the result! The darker shade used on the treads creates a subtle accent while the series of whimsical bird etchings add an understated, yet punchy touch. Quirky, pretty and totally gorgeous... ADORE it!

Decorating Master Class: Colour Injection

As you know, I'm a die-hard advocate of the 'White on White' school of interior styling, but that doesn't stop me from having moments of intense fascination with colour. To prevent homes from becoming bland and lifeless, injections of bright, beautiful, fun colour are sometimes the perfect antidote.

Creating the perfect scheme is the crucial step... start with a collection of images, colour swatches, fabrics and wallpapers that you love. Play with them, mix them up, try startling combinations - you will be surprised where the exercise takes you.

You can then peel back the layers to start piecing together a colour scheme that reflects your theme...

For me, a little goes a long, long way, but don't be afraid to be daring if it suits your personality... your home should be a total expression of your individuality!

Clever Under Stair Storage Idea

I have been very taken with the idea of small, perfectly formed homes of late. In small houses, you need to be highly creative in terms of storage solutions. I'm always amazed by how much storage you can build into a home... all those wasted nooks and crannies can be easily turned into excellent cupboards, drawers and shelves. I love the great under stair solution above - it provides the perfect combination of practical storage space with aesthetic appeal. The little reading nook is ideal for small bodies and cats!

The Crossroads

I have meandered my way through my life, taking scenic route after scenic route. The views have been pretty, the journey sometimes tough but I have trodden the rambling path with a happy heart. I have married another meanderer... another dreamer... another romantic. We now find ourselves at a crossroads and true to form, we don't much like the idea of jumping on the highway. The air around us is buzzing with the hum of a thousand possibilities. The world is waiting with open arms. What will we do? Where will we go?

Children's Vintage Art Idea

I was so smitten with the beautiful vintage-inspired artworks created by Sarah Barnett of Twice Designs that I decided to have a go myself (if you missed my Creative Little Soul interview with her, check it out here) . I found some quirky vintage playing cards on ebay and then turned them into an artwork for my little boy's room. The cards cost about $6 (AUS) and the white Ikea frame cost $39.95 (AUS). It's not quite as good as Sarah's but I love the idea.

I'm not sure about the white backing board... I'm considering making it navy blue. Any thoughts?

A Chair Just for ME

I love to read. More specifically, I love to read while curled up in an armchair. A comfortable armchair with feather cushions and enough room for me to tuck my legs right up. Do we own such an armchair? NO. What is the closest thing we have? My husband's Eames chair (...it's black and masculine and thoroughly uncomfortable!). I'd love to own this chair above - it would sit in the sunny corner of our bedroom where I could lounge to my heart's content... if only I had time for lounging... one day, perhaps when a certain little person no longer requires constant, round-the-clock surveilance, I will be found tucked up in my chair, fast asleep with a book open on my chest!

Now you know how technologically challenged I am? You know how incapable my brain is of processing anything remotely connected to computers? You know how much I loathe internet jargon and techy speak and people who are obsessed with their gadgets? Well, finally, after months and months of deliberating (to the point of ad nauseum), I am the proud owner of a brand spanking new WHITE iPhone 4 (hip hip hooray, clap, clap, clap!). And. I. LOVE. it!

I must say, that it does seem to be taking me an inordinate amount of time to figure out how to use it (unfortunately, it didn't come with a 14 y.o that I could conveniently carry around in my pocket to give me instructions!). A Well Worn Floor

I don't know about you, but I grew up in a household where our heights were recorded on the bathroom door jam. When my parents eventually sold my childhood home, my mother threatened to remove the entire door frame just so she could keep the scribbles and etchings of all our milestones (... you'll be pleased to know that I did finally make it to 5ft 4 inches despite a harrowing few years hovering around the 4ft mark!).

So when I came across this fabulous 'measuring tape' style height measure on Etsy, I thought it was the answer to every parent's dilemma... when you move, just roll it up and cart it along to the next place... easy as pie! The fact that it looks suitably vintagey and retro is just an added bonus really!

Motherhood

Sunday was Mother's Day... my very first ever... my time to reflect on the wonder of being part of the perpetual miracle of life... my time to treasure the warm little body that clings and flings and wriggles in my arms as I try to kiss his sweet, sticky face. I am now part of a collective body of souls united by the simple, yet incredible act of mothering. We are an army of sorts - we are protecting a city of angels from the ravages of an uncertain world - determined to preserve their white feathery wings and their glowing halos so that their little cherub faces can turn forever towards the light and know peace.

I was loved and hugged and showered with kisses but what my little boy may never understand is that he alone is the gift.

I'm a girly girl (I know... you're shocked, right?!). I've often whinged and wined about the fact that I now live in a male dominated world that is literally dripping with navy blue clothes and yellow tonka trucks! I desperately love my boys (both the big one and the little one) but I do occasionally dream of pink tulle skirts and silver fairy wings, of lavender cupcakes and sparkly shoes.

So I've decided that the only thing for it is to create my very own backyard shed (...I don't actually have a backyard yet, but I'm working on it!). I would have it totally decked out in white and pastels with a huge, jangly, glittering chandelier hanging from above, fairy lights strung all around, a kettle and a chair for my cat Daphne (... Daphne doesn't exist yet either by the way!). Would you care to join me for tea?

I live in an old apartment with picture rails and I sometimes get a bit stumped for ideas when hanging small prints. I love the arrangement above... the different shapes and sizes of frames combined with the varying heights works really well to create a gallery feel. Never in a million years would I have hung a picture as high as the round frame on the left, but it creates a perfect sense of balance don't you think?

This week I was delighted to interview the very lovely Stephanie Nichols - an accountant turned lamp shade designer who is the creative force behind local Australian company, Steal The Limelight. Finding stunning lamp shades is one of my pet obsessions, so I was thrilled to discover that Stephanie not only stocks a whole range of beauties online, but she will custom-make shades to order (hip, hip, hooray!). WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN BACKGROUND?

I have no formal training in design but probably should have followed that path rather than accounting which is the path I took. I have always had an interest in home décor and interior design and have renovated numerous houses. Other than the complete rebuild of our house in Balgowlah Heights, my most recent home decorating adventure was in Beechworth, Victoria. I bought an old turn of the century cottage and moved another cottage from Melbourne onto the site. With the help of my brother who is a builder we completely redecorated the houses. I absolutely loved that project!

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING YOUR COMPANY AND HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN BUSINESS?

Steal The Limelight was born out of sheer necessity. When I was decorating our home in Balgowlah Heights, I wanted some fabric lampshades to hang over my island bench but I didn’t just want plain ones. I looked everywhere but all the fabric pendant shades on the market were either made of poor quality fabric or they were very expensive. I researched the materials required for making my own shades for months and found good quality lampshade lining in Europe, Australian made wires and the Warwick Fabrics showroom where I made my first lampshade fabric purchases.

I have been in business for almost a year now! I love pouring over magazines and fabric houses searching for beautiful fabrics to create gorgeous brightly coloured and heavily patterned lampshades that people can enjoy in their homes.

HOW DID YOU TURN YOUR BUSINESS IDEA INTO A REALITY?

Many, many hours of research and many failed lampshade attempts that ended up at St. Vincent D ‘Pauls (a charity). My quality standards are very high, and of course my accounting background has been very handy! My family, particularly my husband Brett, are very patient!

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS MANUFACTURED LOCALLY?

I hand make all of my shades in my studio which is part of my home in Balgowlah Heights, they are each a labour of love and I never tire of admiring the finished product!

HOW CAN PEOPLE BUY YOUR SHADES?

My shades are available from my online store. I also regularly attend Mosman and Lane Cove Markets and recently made my debut at Billycart Markets in Narrabeen with my children's range. My products are also available from Galvanised at Millthorpe, near Bathurst and the soon to be opened I Heart Gallery here in Sydney. I ship to all parts of Australia via courier.

I found it beneath a whole pile of junk at a garage sale just down the road... the best $5 I've spent in a long time! Quirky Art Ideas for Children's Rooms

I'm always on the lookout for fun, creative and affordable art ideas for children's bedrooms. Here are some of my recent favourites...

This door is so simple and so clever... the possibilities are endless... you could get the children to create their own artwork, you could use a vintage poster or some funky wallpaper... or paint the inserts with blackboard paint so they can scribble on their door with chalk!

This idea is ingenious for little kids... imagine how much fun they would have changing the images around!

The frame above has been backed with wire mesh to make it easy to attach different items - kids can peg, hang and tie up all the little bits and pieces they collect.

Framed vintage hankies... a great idea! You could even hunt down ones with monogrammed initials to represent the alphabet... "A", "B", "C", "D"... or find ones with an animal theme.

Sometimes I wonder if you all tire of my obsession with vintage paraphernalia... in particular, my love of vintage suitcases, which upon reflection, do seem to appear in a rather startling number of posts! I'm afraid that I have to plead total helplessness - you see, it turns out I'm an addict - a problem I've had since I was about seven when my mother gave me an antique flower press as a gift (other little girls wanted Cabbage Patch Kids... I wanted vintage lace doilies!). No matter how much I write about it, no matter how much I surround myself with it, no matter how many gorgeous pictures of tatty old stuff I post, I just can't satisfy my craving for VINTAGE! I'm considering starting a support group... anybody care to join?

Lucky Number Seven

Have you heard of the blog The Odessa May Society? If not, you better get your skates on quick smart and scoot over there for a peek... I met Jennie Prince, the talented author of this lovely site, through the recent Blogging Your Way e-course. I was really touched that Jennie nominated Wicker & Stitch for a Stylish Blogger award (woohoo!). I always get such a kick out of these things - the blogging world is so full of love and friendship and encouragement.

The deal with this award is that the recipient has to reveal 7 things about themselves that readers wouldn't already know before passing the award onto others... now, I've done this a few times before so, as a bit of a twist on the theme, I thought it would be fun to share some personal things that have happened to me today that have made me smile:

1. Our little Monkey, who will be seven months old in a few days time, woke up this morning and called for "Dadada" and "Mamama" from his cot... Andre and I lay in bed, holding hands and smiling into the darkness at the wonder of being somebody's parents (never mind that it was 5.30am!).

2. I received a package of beautiful fabrics in the post and then sat with them on my lap, stoking them like they were a cat... yes, really!

3. A friend leant me a little book called All My Friends Are Dead... you have to read it, its hysterical!

4. The Monkey got the giggles while eating his morning tea and couldn't stop... I wish I could bottle his unbridled joy and give a dose to all the sad people in the world!

5. I went for a walk in the sunshine and felt the warmth seep into my soul and fill up my heart.

6. I received a beautiful email from my gorgeous friend Jane, full of wisdom, love and encouragement... her blog, Life on Planet Baby is a lovely place to visit.

7. I rang my Mum to tell her about the cot calling... her delight at my delight made me feel light as a feather.

Today, I am so excited to introduce the gorgeous Sarah Barnett of twice designs - a writer turned crafty mama with an eye for creating quirky vintage-inspired cards and artwork. Now you know how much I love anything remotely vintage and quirky, so it should come as no surprise that I have become mildly obsessed with Sarah's whimsical designs - please check out her fabulous blog and Etsy store to see her full range of beautiful products!

WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN BACKGROUND?

It’s funny you should ask that, because I don’t have a design background! My background is history and writing and after postgraduate study, I ended up as a movie reviewer! Since childhood I always considered myself inartistic. I have always wanted to be able to draw and create visual wonder but felt completely lacking in skill. Words were my thing. I wanted to write and I did write a novel that was short-listed for the Vogel/Australian Literary award. I still wouldn’t consider myself a designer or an artist. I call what I do, “almost art”. It’s really just tinkering and recontextualising what someone else has already created.

I started making cards when my third child was about one. I stopped work just before he was born and I felt the need to make something. I had a whopping case of writers’ block and was frustrated. As a mum there’s a feeling of never finishing ANYTHING. There is always more washing, more cooking, more cleaning. Nothing is ever done, complete. And while I love being a mum it is a fairly thankless job. So I started making cards, then soft toys, then brooches and my almost art. And I couldn’t quite believe that people liked it!

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR STARTING twice designs?

The special thing about twice designs is the notion of recycling. I am passionate about vintage goodies and recycling so I’ve combined them to make one-off and limited edition pieces. I have a lifelong love and fixation with vintage books, posters and games - there is a richness of colour, illustration and texture that issues a warmth and humour that is hard to explain.

I am also inspired by the whole recycling / upcycling movement in the US and also Australia. Light fittings from milk bottles, Knitting needle bracelets, seat belts into bags and fashion belts – I enjoy the recontextualising of items and the creativity involved in seeing something transformed. I enjoy using vintage and preloved materials because they have already “lived”; they have a story. They have been used, worn or played with and are getting another chance to be useful and beautiful. And then there’s that idea of a second chance, the opportunity to begin again. I love that.

HOW DID YOU TURN THE IDEA OF A BUSINESS INTO A REALITY?

Well it’s still kind of small, but I started by selling at markets which was great for getting feedback and figuring out what works and what doesn’t. I still do markets because I love that contact with people who have bought my things. After that I visited a couple of shops and left samples. Some led to sales, others didn’t. But I was amazed at how kind and encouraging people were.

WHERE DO YOU SOURCE YOUR BEAUTIFUL VINTAGE PRODUCTS FROM?

I find some items locally through garage sales and op shops, but mostly I find my vintage delights from the US and the UK through ebay and etsy. A few lovely people have donated buttons and buckles. It’s amazing how many mothers and grandmothers collected buttons!

ARE YOUR PRODUCTS PRINTED LOCALLY?

My cards are all made and printed by me. My “almost art” wall pieces are assemblage pieces so I use genuine vintage playing cards, maps, scrabble board, toy cars etc. I don’t make any prints of these – they are just one-off special pieces. (See image below of vintage scrabble board artwork).

WHERE CAN PEOPLE FIND YOUR PRODUCTS?

I sell at Mosman Markets (NSW) which is held on the first Saturday of the month. I also do a few other markets that are Iisted on my blog. I sell through Madeit and Etsy. Sous le Soleil (Roseville), Pulp (Balgowlah) and Neck of the Woods (Manly) also sell my products.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF RUNNING twice designs?

Time and juggling. Even at this stage where things are small there is so much more to do than just making stuff.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT WITH REGARD TO THE BUSINESS?

I think maybe I’m still waiting for that one, but I must say it is lovely when people seek me out to tell me that they’ve bought something and they love it. That does my head in.

Lately, I've been harbouring a quiet obsession with pattern, particularly patterned fabric... this is something quite new for me... I'm more your 'co-ordinated plains' kind of girl. But suddenly, I can't get enough of bold colour combinations and wild designs. Detailing: 2 x double rows of silver upholstery studs around the top and bottom (studs to be 10mm apart)

3 x vertical single rows of silver upholstery studs spaced at 1/3 intervals (studs to be 10mm apart) - be sure to cover seam with studs

The ottomans would look beautiful in a range of fabrics but I would choose a fine-grain leather in white or grey to achieve a similar look to the image.

Fabrics (L-R): Classic Ticking Natural, Astbury Chintz, Daishi Platinum - all from Unique Fabrics

I have been looking at these gorgeous fabrics on my inspiration board for weeks, imagining them made up into oversized cushions - I can't decide whether they'd look best on a cream sofa or a dark charcoal sofa... what do you think?

I'm such a stripes girl... I'd quite like a feature chair upholstered in the Daishi fabric (far right ) for our living room - such a shame my husband's black Eames chair takes current pride of place (we have a 'creative conflict' over the Eames - I'm a big fan of it, just in someone else's home!).

My vintage typewriter sits on a shelf in the kitchen for all the world to see (...because where else in the house would you keep a typewriter?!) but rarely moves except on the odd occasion when I decide to clean it... a job that I will gladly give to Leo as punishment one of these days when he's old enough! I see it so often as I walk in and out of the kitchen, that I have almost forgotten how much I adore it.

So I have decided that today is 'Appreciate Your Forgotten Favourite Possessions Day' and I encourage you all to unearth your treasured keepsakes, hold them, stroke them and recapture the joy you felt when you first bought them home.

P.S. My apologies for the bombardment of my own photos lately but I have excruciatingly slow internet this week and can't browse the web for yummy content :(

The Flower Thief strikes again!

For weeks I have been pushing the pram past two particularly beautiful rose bushes, my palms just itching to pinch a couple of buds to photograph... but these bushes are on somebody else's property and I've always drawn the line at nicking flowers from private gardens (I prefer to pilfer from the local government instead - it makes me feel better about paying taxes!). Today, would you believe it, the ground was littered with fallen flowers like a blanket laid out for the pixies! I walked home with a smile on my face and a pram full of petals... happy days!

Except, it isn't lavender at all... I found these beautiful 'ropes' lying on the pavement but have absolutely no idea what they are! The white vines are covered with little purple buds... does anybody have a clue what they might be?

The key elements of this scheme are butter yellow, milky aqua and cream with dashes of pale coral and slate. I chose a beautiful range of different textured fabrics that mirrored the gentrified retro vibe of the fashion shoot.

Whacky Wednesday

CONFESSION: despite my great (and somewhat overly obvious) love of white simplicity, I have a hidden kooky streak that inexplicably draws me to off-beat, quirky and downright wacky interiors. I can't help it... I become totally consumed by the sheer individuality of certain spaces. Take this incredibly intriguing home in Mapsebury, UK - part of me loathes it, but the other part of me thinks its one of the most fabulous concoctions of eccentricity I've ever clapped eyes on! You can be sure that there is not another home like this one anywhere in the world...

I'd be fascinated to know what you think - could you happily live here, or would you need to be taken out in a straight jacket after twenty-four hours? (best not answer that until you've seen the bathrooms!)
