Vintage Suitcase Metamorphosis

Being the vintage suitcase addict that I am, I thought this idea was brilliant!  To me, this chest of drawers is the perfect example of up-cycling done right - taking old items and breathing new life into them in a way that suits their original form.  My husband would argue that it's sacrilege to destroy the authenticity of anything so beautiful, no matter how clever the innovation... he hates "messing with imperfection", preferring the honesty of purity.  What do you think?  Do we risk the annihilation of time-worn character when we seek to improve on the old?

As a general rule, I'm with your husband on this. I cringe everytime I see a beautiful old thing which has been tortured into an improvement...be it a wonderful old book which has been cut up into decorations, or beautiful timber furniture which is spray painted. But in this case, (no pun intended!) are the suitcases simply sitting on a shelf each, or have they been cut down so that the front of them is attached to a drawer? If the latter, I think it is brilliantly clever.

I love the look of this, and think it would be a great use for busted vintage suitcases, but I wouldn't want to alter suitcases that were in good shape. I collect vintage cases of various sizes. I use them for storage and to serve as end tables.

How many of those neat old suitcases get thrown away by people who don't see any beauty in them? Altering them is definitely better than sending them to the dump...
